Loons on the Lake

I woke up early on the 4th of July morning to see a really great sunrise. I normally do not get up that early but for some reason I did and man was it worth it! I decided to get the camera and the dog and go out on the boat and find the loons that I have often photographed. As soon as I got on the boat I could see the loons at the mouth of the canal and knew it was going to be a good day! I have taken photos of the pair before and we have a agreement: I can get within 10-15 ft he and she will dive under and pop back up within 30-40ft and we do it all over again. It was like I had trained the birds to do this and it worked out to be some great photos. Enjoy!

Hello,

On August 27th-30th I was able to spend time at Legends Ranch with 8 children with mental or physical handicaps as well as other illness. During these four days they were given the opportunity to shoot a whitetail buck of a lifetime. Most importantly they were given the chance to enjoy the outdoors while spending time away from the clinics and hospitals.

Let me tell you my story with a young man named J.J, J.J is a 12 year old from North Carolina who has mild retardation and cerebral palsy. J.J is a very quiet person and when I first meet him I was not sure if how well he could communicate with others. He walked around looking and touching everything that was new and different to him. He was with his mother for the weekend and they sometimes used sign language to communicate to each other. On Friday I was able to sit in the blind with J.J, Colby Bettis and his mom, for some reason the deer were really acting weird and just before dark a nice eight pointer came in and Colby said to J.J "do you want that one?" J.J said "Yeah mama yeah!" and held his hand to his head to show how big the antlers were. Colby and J.J lined up the scope and turned on the red dot laser. "Bang" the gun went off and the buck ran off just a little bit and then he just looked at the blind. He had missed! J.J was not happy but still he was very excited. So the next morning we went out and sat in a different location, as the sun came up J.J was starting to get impatient and excited about seeing some more big bucks. I may or may not have dosed off a little and I heard some commotion in the blind. Around 8:30 am a nice 8 pt came out with his head down all you could see is his back and the horns still in velvet. I looked at Colby and he looked at me and we both knew that that was the buck that J.J was going to take. Same as before they lined up the laser and the scope and clicked the safety off and Colby said, " Now squeeze the trigger J.J" "Bang" the giant 8pt drops like a ton of bricks and J.J says "Lets go get him mama!" We knew it was a perfect shot! I taped, as he was so excited to see his trophy. I was smiling, Colby was smiling, His mother was smiling and J.J was holding his hand to his head saying, "We got him mama!" So we walk up to the great 8 pt and took some picture and loaded him up to take back to the lodge to show off. Colby let J.J talk on the radio to tell everyone what had happened and J.J yells "BULL DOWN!" and cheers came from the other end.

This was a great weekend for all and a great time to see God's work. That weekend took a lot of support from sponsors to make happened that is why I wanted to share with you just one of the eight stories that have changed these kids lives. October 1st - 4th Legends Ranch will be hosting another hunt but this time it will be for Purple Heart recipients that have lost limbs and or have been injured in war, another group deserving of a memorable hunt of a lifetime. This being a local ranch and a local family ( Colby and Skipper Bettis) I would love to see local businesses help with this event. I know that you get asked all the time but if you could just see some of the footage that I was able to capture you would understand what I am talking about.

As most of you know the joys of hunting and spending time outdoors, this year lets join together and let someone else less fortunate experience a hunt of a lifetime. This year for the Purple Heart hunt they still need someone or a group to sponsor the jackets to give to all of the hunters for a total of $400.00 plus anything else we can all put in for.

Just spent the most amazing 4 days out at Legends Ranch. They had 8 special kids that were given the opportunity to shoot a trophy buck. I was lucky enough to be a small part of the experience. Life changing WOW! Here is a few photos I will be posting a video in a few weeks as well.

What a deal, I have been somewhat collecting old camera for 6 or so years and have a few but this will help. Some work, some do not but it is not about that just fun to display and share with our clients. Enjoy!

Wedding preview for this weekend... Such a great couple!

This weekend we will be attending the wedding of Jenny and Brandon. The wedding will be held in Petoskey, MI at a church located downtown and the reception is being held at the fairgrounds. I shot some engagement photos with jenny and Brandon and by the time I was done I felt like we were old college buddies! Really great chemistry and a great fit to take some great wedding photos. I can't wait!

WOW! It has been a while! Well here at Yeoman Photography we are very busy and that is a great thing. We have been through some major changes with the studio and the business. We have had a break in, new carpet because of the break in, added several new backgrounds, dressed up our entrance to the studio and have been playing with the idea of expanding the business by adding several new designers and photographers. Below are some photo that I have taken in the last few months and I will be posting some more soon!

Wild Whitetail Deer in Mecosta County

This past weekend I traveled across the Mighty Mac to the majestic Upper Peninsula of Michigan. If you have never traveled to the part of the state I encourage you to pack the car and just go! The western part of the US ( Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California )is beautiful in its own way but we have something even better right in our back yard. Michigan's Upper Peninsula is like a different world, the land has been the same for years and it is "pure michigan". The landscapes are breath taking and if you love where land meets water it is your paradise! I went to Cedar Campus in Cedarville, MI located west of the straits and south of the Soo. O my gosh ! This place is great and I could only imagine what it would be like in the summer. It is right in the center of the Les Cheneaux Islands (French: meaning "The Channel Islands") are a group of 36 small islands, some inhabited, along 12 miles of Lake Huron shoreline on the southeastern tip of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the United States. The name is French for the channels, noting the many channels between the islands in the group. They are about 30 miles north and east of the Straits of Mackinac and about 35 miles south of Sault Ste. Marie. The islands are a popular resort and boating and kayaking area. The nearby communities of Hessel and Cedarville on the mainland offer marinas, camping, lodging, restaurants, and shopping. The Les Chenaux Islands Antique Boat Show & Festival of the Arts has been held on the second Saturday of each August since 1976 in Hessel. It is the world's largest antique wooden boat show.

Another great place to visit is Paradise, MI home of the Tahquamenon Falls that are two different waterfalls on the Tahquamenon River. Both sets are located near Lake Superior in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The water is notably brown in color from the tannins leached from the cedar swamps which the river drains. This phenomenon is responsible for the alternative local name 'Root Beer Falls'. The upper falls are more than 200 feet (60 m) across and with a drop of approximately 50 feet (15 m). During the late-spring runoff, the river drains as much as 50,000 gallons (200,000 liters) of water per second, making the upper falls the third most voluminous vertical waterfall east of the Mississippi River, after Niagara Falls and Cohoes Falls, both in New York State. The lower falls, located four miles (6.5 km) downstream, are a series of five smaller falls cascading around an island which can be reached by rowboat. A hiking trail runs between the falls along the riverside. The falls are within the Tahquamenon Falls State Park, between Newberry, Michigan, and Paradise, Michigan. They are a popular tourist destination in the Upper Peninsula during all seasons. Snowmobile trails lead almost to the falls, and walkways are kept clear for most of the winter. The Tahquamenon is noted as being the land of Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha - "by the rushing Tahquamenaw" where Hiawatha built his canoe. "Tahquamenon Falls" is also a song from Sufjan Stevens's album Michigan. While the name Tahquamenon is now primarily associated with the falls, it appears to have originally designated an island in Whitefish Bay: Tahquamenon Island. The first written record of the name appears as "Outakouaminan" in a 1671 French map.[1]

How to take a great portrait, no matter what your subject's species.

"If you watch baby gorillas and small children, they're not that different. There are a lot of gestures and things that are the same," says Todd Rosenberg. "Gorillas don't have filters" for their feelings -- they simply act on them.

He should know. A corporate and editorial photographer, Rosenberg spent 10 years working for Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo -- a perfect place to indulge his passion for photographing animals. It also gave him the rare chance to photograph some of them in a studio.

Take Mooka the orangutan, whose picture here has the composition and even the snuggly prop of a classic baby portrait. "Contrary to what a lot of people think, her hair is natural. It's not styled to look like Don King," Rosenberg says.

The baby orangutan was hand-raised by zoo staff, and her familiarity with humans made her a good candidate for the studio. "Unfortunately Mooka was very scared because we were using flash," he recalls. So he shot just a handful of frames before the little primate made it clear that she wanted to go home.

While few people can photograph zoo animals in a studio, Rosenberg's tips work for more domesticated beasts, including children. (See more of his photography at www.toddrphoto.com.)

1. Blow out the background. You need a white backdrop and at least two lights -- one each for subject and background. First, set your main light and exposure, using a wide aperture to give you just enough depth of field for your subject, but not the background, to be sharp. Then set the background light's power at least 1.3 EV greater than the subject exposure. Eliminate shadows by keeping your subject far from the background. Rosenberg put Mooka on seamless white paper on a hard floor, so the paper wouldn't dent, and used Chimera white umbrellas with his Speedotron Black Line 2400 light heads and power pack. He shot Kodak T-Max 100 using a Hasselblad 500C/M and 80mm lens.

2. Hide the handler. Animals (and children) can't always pose the way you'd like, or they don't want to be separated from the person who brought them to you. One solution is to have the handler or parent hold the subject, and drape a cloth over their arms or even their bodies. Depending on their color and texture, blankets or other fabrics can add visual interest to the picture. Mooka's handler's arm is hidden by the towel at the bottom of the frame.

3. Say the magic word. Interacting with your subjects can be the hardest part. Say their names to get their attention. "I try to have the animals connect to the camera, communicating with their eyes," Rosenberg says. "You can feel more of what's going on." Try to find words that work with pets, such as "treat." Children often like funny words and sounds, too. If you have a child and a pet in the same shot, settle them down one at a time. Often the pet will be easier than the child!

4. Work efficiently. Neither animals nor children last long. Have your lighting and exposure ready to go the moment your subject is in place. Then make sure they're comfortable before you start. And once you do begin, exercise patience and wait for the most natural and spontaneous gestures and moments. But don't spend forever trying to force something that isn't there -- be willing to walk away and come back. If you respect their limits, kids often will want to come back later. "I never have my daughter in the studio more than 15 minutes," Rosenberg says. "Kids and animals are similar: Be ready, be quick, be patient."
